Peel Ports Mersey managing director Gary Hodgson said the agreement was another sign of confidence in what he said would be a transformational project and a major investment in the north-west region.
The development of “Liverpool2” at Seaforth will allow the world’s largest container ships to dock – carrying up to 13,500 containers at a time. The port’s current limit is 3,500.
The only other UK ports capable of handling the vessels are Felixstowe, Southampton and the planned London Gateway.
Containerised timber product cargoes from North America arrive at Liverpool on regular services provided by ACL, Hapag-Lloyd and OOCL, while increasing numbers from other regions arrive via worldwide services by MSC and CMA CGM.
